Compound Words

Today the first graders worked on making compound words. They used two smaller words to make one brand new longer word. For example: star and fish = starfish

Read to the Wall

When the students are done writing a book, they have a new job...they read it to the wall!

Reading their book out loud helps them to check to see if it makes sense and allows them to make any changes that are needed.

Punctuation and Capitalization

We read a book called Who is Taller together as a class. The students noticed that the book had no capital letters or any punctuation. They partnered up and got to take a red pen and put in everything that was missing. They were so excited about this. They also wondered why an author would forget these things. Good question! I told them Mrs. Warner actually made the book with the missing things.

Making Change

During math today, we worked at making change. We used dollars and dimes to "buy" items. Then our partner, the shop keeper, gave us change using pennies.

Guest Reader

Mrs. Dominski came to read to us today. She read some really cool books! She even read How to be a Pirate to get us ready Spring Fling.

Math With Tangrams

We read Grandfather Tang's Story by Ann Tompert. It is a story told with tangrams. The students then got to use 7 tangrams to recreate the animals from the story. Some of these puzzles were very tricky!
